Captain's Day 2010
Rarely has a day run more smoothly as this year's Captain's Day hosted by Club Captain Dennis Orton.
With Dennis and Neil Woodhams, Chairman of the Rules, Handicap and Competitions Committee running the day from start to finish, all that remained was for the participants to relax and enjoy their golf and, for some, win a prize. Everything was catered for, there was certainly no chance of malnutrition as Dennis provided sustenance both at halfway and after play for all. The organisation was slick and professional with Neil taking care of the scoring as players finished and presiding over the prize giving, which was well attended, at the end of the day.
The first tee time was 7 am, an early start for some, leading a field of 125 golfers with play concluding at about 5 pm. With such support Dennis was kept busy all day.
The golf itself was full of good scoring as the weather was perfect and the course, as usual, was turned out in great condition, it even looked green again with the little rain that we have had recently.
The earlier starters fared the best with Mike Hood (41 pts) and Dave King (44 pts) setting the pace in Divisions 1 and 2 respectively. They would both hold on to their positions all day although a late run was made by Pete Taylor whose 42 points was good enough for second in Division 2, whilst another early starter, Graeme Winning claimed second in Division 1 with 40 points. The Ladies' prize was a closely fought affair, Lesley Davies finishing first on 38 points, one ahead of Jane Haycock. In the Juniors Pete Crombie came out on top with a fine 40 points.
There was some joy for the later starters; by definition the "Longest Putt" competition had to be won late in the day. It went to Adrian Brown who holed out across the practice green from the rough near to the path! Also two nearest the pin prizes were won with the last attempt of the day, Jason Nettle won nearest the nearest the pin in two at the last.

As the Captain alluded to in his closing speech, a key element of Captain's Day is the effort that all the volunteer helpers put in in order to relieve as many players of as much money as possible for this year's chosen charities. Last Sunday was no exception with opportunitites to donate throughout the day by contributing for halfway refreshments, having clubs cleaned, missing the first fairway and many more. None of these had a set charge but the generosity of Petersfield members meant that the two charities, the Sussex Snowdrop Trust and the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, benefited to the tune of £770 on the day.
Putting
Further down this mail is an article on one of my favourite parts of the game which most of us routinely neglect, putting. If you read on, the article focuses on the importance of the correct lie and length of putter, crucial for success on the greens.
Earlier in the season I ran a putting clinic on a Saturday morning looking at how to improve putting and surveying the putters that were being used. The most common problem, with 90% of golfers on this occasion, was the player trying to make a smooth accurate stroke with a putter that was too long. In each case the putter had been purchased based on brand and not fit. To experience using a putter with too long a shaft, try making a smooth square stroke with a four iron, an exaggeration perhaps, but you will get the idea.
We would be pleased to check your putter fitting, and in most cases, we could alter the length without the expense of a new club. This could well shave a shot or two off each round. If you would like a check, click here or come into the shop and ask.
The negative effects of carrying, pushing or pulling a fully-laden golf bag over 18 holes have been well documented. Poor scoring (especially on the back 9) through fatigue and long term injuries are all risks that so many golfers expose themselves to, week after week. That said, do you still carry your bag or do you make use of a powered trolley?
Take a couple of minutes to give me some feedback on the subject and I’ll enter your name into a draw where you could WIN one of PowaKaddy’s newest trolleys, the aptly named “TOUCH” (Click to learn more about it.)

Too many golfers select a golf ball because they think it offers extra distance. The problem with this approach is that the launch and spin and offer control around the greens – that means you’re hurting your scorecard.
Find the best mix between distance and short game spin on my website with Titleist’s interactive ball fitting engine. Here, you can answer a few questions about your ‘scoring’ game and the engine will select for you the two most suitable balls in the Titleist range.
For these last few days, those of you who complete the fitting engine will then be able to purchase a sleeve of each of these balls to test at a once-off reduced price - PLUS you’ll be entered into a draw to win one of a dozen prizes! Just click here! |

| MISSING BEFORE YOU START |
 |
Jack Nicklaus stated that 90% of the misses his Pro-Am partners made on Putts they should sink, were made before they even read the line of the Putt. Rarely did he encounter amateurs with a Putter that had the right length and lie angle to allow their eyes to be over the ball in a comfortable putting position.
You will see lots of adverts these days talking about ‘roll’ and ‘alignment’. Aiming the putter in the correct direction and getting a great roll are both important factors BUT let’s start with a Putter that allows you to make the correct stroke.

It goes without saying that carrying extra weight – in any form – is bad for your endurance, but now some of the European Tour’s leading sports fitness experts have added fuel to the fire, suggesting that carrying a golf bag, or even pulling a trolley, is fundamentally harmful to your body.
Josh Salzmann, the fitness coach to Ernie Els and other leading sports and entertainment clients - and the resident fitness expert at Wentworth - is dismayed when he sees thousands of golfers arrive on the first tee carrying their golf bags and believes that carrying encourages poor body alignment. “Repeatedly lifting and carrying a bag full of metal over a four hour period is madness. If I asked someone to do the equivalent with dumbbells in the gym you would think I was crazy!”
The safest, and healthiest, way to get round the course is with a powered trolley; but how many of you actually do? Take just a couple of minutes to fill in my trolley survey below and let me know. |
